About Kyuquot Sound

Kyuquot Sound on Vancouver Island is remote and breath-takingly beautiful; luckily, there are still some places in the world that are untouched and largely inaccessible. Many anglers have a desire for isolation. Kyuquot Sound remains first choice as their destination. Our lodge is accessible only by boat or by floatplane so you don't have to worry about fighting off the crowds here.

KYUQUOT VILLAGE
View of Walter's cove, from our deck

Kyuquot Village or Walters Cove, is home to about 150 year round people. It has a Red Cross medical clinic,  a school, a few B&B's, and a well supplied general store with post office.  Rugged Point Lodge is located on Walter's Island, in upper west Kyuquot.  We are approximately 150 meters from the Government dock and general store down a single lane path, and double lane boardwalk.  This boardwalk and path follows the shoreline of Walters Island, and branches out to a few hiking trails which lead to small rocky beaches and view points.

KYUQUOT SOUND'S FISHING GROUNDS
Fraser with a nice salmon, fishing Spring Island

The Barrier Islands form an arc in front of Kyuquot Sound with much of the structure barely submerged, making Kyuquot Sound possibly the most rock-filled sound on the Island’s west coast. 10 to 12 miles out is the well known "Salmon Highway" or as we refer to it, the 50 Fathom Edge.

CLOSE TO THE FISHING ACTION

Our lodge is close to the fishing action, so anglers spend more time with their lines in the water instead of traveling - which means our running time is between 4 to 12 miles. We are located on a main migration path of salmon heading south to Barkley Sound, Nootka Sound and beyond as far as the Columbia River.

ALL SPECIES OF SALMON

All 5 species of Pacific salmon return to the rivers in Kyuquot Sound. Local fish make up a relatively small part of the multitudes that pass by on the "Salmon Highway". Feeder Chinook are present in good numbers all year while the main fishing season for Chinook and Halibut is from May through September.
